Gene Cooper

Hello, I'm Gene Cooper. I grew up in northeast Louisiana, where fishing was a big  part of my childhood. I stopped fishing during my college years until a  tragic accident brought me back to it in my late twenties. Fishing  helped me cope with PTSD and avoid becoming a statistic. 

I currently reside in Red River, NM, where I own a small tackle shop. I advocate for  everyone to experience fishing at least once in their lifetime. I have a  passion for all aspects of the outdoors, including hunting, hiking, and  fishing.  

I am the inaugural 2023 New Mexico Bass Nation Kayak State Champion. I travel across the United  States to compete in local and national bass tournaments, as well as  pursue new personal bests in both boat and kayak fishing. 

I  provide guided trips for bass, trout, and pike fishing across the  state. My base location is Eagle Nest Lake in Eagle Nest, NM. I enjoy  interacting with individuals who share similar interests, whether it be  fishing, designing new lures, or appreciating the outdoors. 

Fishing Equipment.  

Most of my equipment consists of the G loomis NRX+ rods paired with Shimano or Lew's reels. You don't need over 20 rods, but a good one is essential. I used to use a $100  combo, which works until you start competing for tens of thousands of  dollars. If budget is a constraint, I believe the $100 range combos from Lew's is the best option. 

Regarding boat equipment, I utilize a live scope on both my boat and kayak. Although there are differing  opinions, it is beneficial to have the latest technology available. When  used correctly, it provides valuable insights into fish behavior. 

Fishing Tips and Tricks. 

I  have developed specific fishing styles. Many people have suggested that  large fish cannot be caught with small baits, but I have demonstrated otherwise. Matching the hatch—or what the fish are eating—significantly increases the likelihood of success.
